CONDOBOLIN
This Lachlan River town near the geographical centre of New South Wales is the centre of a district producing wool, lamb, fruit and mixed nuts. Thomas Mitchell explored the area in 1836, and in 1844 William Lee established a run known as'Condoublin'. The town was gazetted in 1859 and when the railway arrived in 1898 the town became the railhead for the central west.

Of interest in the town is the old Commercial Hotel which is now the Community Crafts Centre with a shop in the old bar. Four kilometres to the west is Condobolin's Bicentennial project, Gum Bend Lake, created by diverting water from the Lachlan River. Swimming, power boating and sailing are popular activities on the lake.

Condobolin also offers water sports on Gum bend Lake and fishing in the Lachlan, which runs through the town. There are plenty of camping facilities close to the water. Mt Tilga at 329m provides breathtaking views of the surrounding wheat, sheep and cattle producing country. There’s bowls, golf and crochet as well as great horse, dog and dirt bike facilities. It is a one hour drive from Parkes, Forbes, West Wyalong and Lake Cargelligo. There is also a Railway Museum, Aboriginal Art and Craft, Community Centre and Musuem. Condobolin and District Kennel Club hosts one of the largest dog shows in NSW and is base for a circuit throughout the region in August which includes Parkes, Peak Hill, Tullamore. There are well maintained grounds and facilities for washing dog blankets at the caravan park.

The Lachlander, one of the town’s two newspapers, was established in 1895 and is one of the last newspapers in the world to still use a flat bed press and a hand operated paper folding machine.

Condobolin has three motels (2 with licensed restaurants), four hotels and a caravan park, an RSL Club, Oriental Restaurant and several cafes

A monument marking the burial place of one of the area's last Aboriginal chiefs is beside the road 40km west of Condobolin and there are other Aboriginal relies in the vicinity.
