Why am
I getting Disconnected?
There
are several things that can cause dropouts, below is a
list of the causes that are common for disconnections:
Call
waiting will cause a connection to disconnect if someone
tries to call you while you are on the Internet. Telephone
lines installed after March 1997 by Telsra had Call
waiting enabled as default. To turn Call waiting on
or off, pick up the handset on the phone and dial the
respective number below, you will hear a recorded message
advising you that Call waiting has been turned on or
off.. It is usually best to turn it off before you dial-up
to LiSP Internet Services and then re-enable it once
you have finished that session.

Phone
line problems can cause disconnections, while on the
phone to a friend or someone else, listen for noises
such and crackles otherwise known as static, this static
can cause disconnections, if you suspect this is a problem,
contact your Telephone Carrier and request they carry
out a line test, they will be able to you how good your
line rates, if they find problems with the line they
are also able to correct these problems.
Having
a phone connected to the phone line can cause problems,
If you are on the Internet and someone in the house
picks up a phone, this will also disconnect you. You
can choose to unplug these phones or ask family members
not to pick up the phone while you are on the Internet.
Also,
Having Phones, Faxes, Answering Machines and Caller
ID units can also cause disconnections, phones are the
biggest culprit as most phones do not have an external
power supply as they draw power out of the phone line
every 10 to 20 minutes to keep their memories and redial
numbers recharged, by doing this it is not leaving the
phone line enough power to keep the Internet Connection
going. To rectify this, unplug all the devices from
phone line leaving the modem the only device connected
to the phone line.
Check
to make sure Internet Explorer does not have the 20
minute idle timer enabled, to do this open up Internet
Explorer, click on View => Options => Connection.
The 'disconnect if idle for more than..." setting can
be found here. If you open a connection using Internet
Explorer and use another program for 20 minutes or so,
Internet Explorer will consider idle time as time that
Internet Explorer is not being used. Even if you're
downloading a file using Internet Explorer for longer
than 20 minutes!
