THE REGION
Dog and Motor home friendly

A leisurely detour off the highway will introduce you to the outback hospitality of the “Heart of NSW. The area is bordered by the Newell, Mid Western, Kidman, Barrier and Oxley Highways., The heart is bisected by the Lachlan River, which is brimming with Red Fin, Golden Perch and Cod and the Bogan River in the north. There are also a number of large lakes popular for water sports. Visit the main service centre of Condobolin, the town of Lake Cargelligo, or the villages of Tottenham, Tullibigeal, Burcher or Fifield. Travellers can leave the stress of the highway behind and still stick to the bitumen, or for the travelers willing to leave the tar there are a number of well maintained roads criss-crossing the region.

Nature’s Paradise the area has a rich mix of wild life with more than 200 species of bird recorded in several areas. Listen for the Sulphur Crested Cockatoos and little corellas provide a wake up call among the Lachlan river gums. (is this true)

The region’s stock routes provide a network of wildlife corridors. There are also more than 20 travelling stock reserves along the Lachlan between Condobolin and Euabalong which allow camping if fees are paid to the Rural Land Protection Board, 30 Bathurst St, Condobolin ph 68952152..

The Heart of NSW lies in Wiradjuri Country, but a number of different language groups were moved to the area during the late 40s. Evidence of this indigenous culture remains in the form of carved and scarred trees along the river bank and in the forests. There are also a large number of very good indigenous artists around Lake Cargelligo and Condobolin. Non indigenous artists and artisans are also plentiful, so keep your eye out for paintings, photography, quilts, craft, woodwork or metalwork. Stores in each town sell locally made items. Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo and Tottenham hold annual Art and Craft competitions and exhibitions (see events). Most of the towns have a community centre or museum also portraying local art and culture.
