The River.
The Macquarie River runs just a short walk [or brief drive] from the CBD, and separates Dubbo
city from the suburb of West Dubbo. There is ample parking near the river and the banks have
been landscaped for the enjoyment of residents and visitors. There are walking tracks and
delightful walks available which are well worth the trouble of taking. Sandy Beach recreation
area is about half a kilometre from the CBD, and West Dubbo is accessed by two bridges
running either end of the main CBD. Both bridges have been named after prominent citizens, the
L.H. Ford after a former mayor, and the Emile Serisier after a Frenchman who was the first
shopkeeper in Dubbo. The photo was taken at Terramungamine, a few kilometres from the city
and shows Aboriginal markings tens of thousands of years old on rocks in the foreground.
Thanks to Mathew Colahan of Dubbo City Development Corporation.
EVENING OUT WEST.
There is an unseen line between the first star
And the moon, so slim.
Like some exotic cup.
As though it quivers there
Wondering if the star will fall
The light faces around them,
One waiting upon another.
The silence echoes
And as though bidden
Another star appears:
And then there is no apparent order
Like diamonds in an overwhelming sea
of velvet.
Look back and try to grasp the moment,
But it is gone
Overwhelmed by the immensity of the heavens.
Poem by Winsome McLachlan, by kind permission.
