Associated names: GERAGHTY, BYRNE, COLLINS 25/16 Researching Victor SWANN born 1904 at Parkes NSW, son of Albert Napthali Thomas SWANN  (b 1871 Birmingham) & Clara LEWIS (b 1880 Durham. Victor marr Elsie May HARDY in Brisbane in 1942. Associated names: PADDON, MCNAMEE, GIBSON, PINCHES, CORNEY. 24/16 James Henry CRABTREE married Agnes BROCKBANK 20 Oct 1897 at St Paul's Lithgow. Their daughter Vera was born 5 Sep 1898 at Esbank. Information at SLNSW with a Crabtree photo (part of the Holtermann Collection) states that Agnes came from Hill End to her parents' (Joseph BROCKBANK and Agnes NELSON) home next to the Workers' club in Tank St to have her baby in 1898. Her father was the first steward there. 23/16 Research inquiry re the position of the grave of Mary VIPOND in the Primitive Methodist section of Bowenfels (Lithgow) cemetery. Mary was born in 1828 in England, married William VIPOND on 11 Nov 1928 at Gretna Green & died in Bathurst Hospital on 8 Mar 1892. She was the daughter of William CARR & Margaret WATSON. Mary & William's children: Edward, Catherine, Margaret, Alfred, Harriet, Walter Carr, Mary Carr, Spencer Carr. 22/16 Research inquiry re John Matthew VICKERY b 1913 Orange, son of John Matthew VICKERY & Selina POUND. John Matthew Vickery Snr, labourer, in 1943 lived with Selina  in Lithgow at 62 Camping Ground & in 1954 at 10 Ferro St Lithgow. John Jr, a machinist, marr 1935 Carcoar Alma L FURNER & later lived at 86 Duration House Littleton. Other names: LUTHOLD, DOUGLAS, GREEN, MCVICAR, VAUGHAN, MORRISON, LOCKEY, DEEPROSE 21/16 Information sought re John Carr ELLIS b 1855 Portsmouth (son of Robert Stainton ELLIS, a Wesleyan minister & Mary CARR) & Ellen (Nellie) Mary PAVEY b 1871 Sydney, daughter of James PAVEY & Ellen Mary PRENDERGAST. Some of the ELLIS children were born when the family lived at Mt Blaxland near Lithgow. The family moved to Vic c1899 where the rest of the children were born. John died in Melbourne in 1914 & Ellen died there in 1958. 20/16 . Information is being sought for information about the following people who are associated with the Hassans Walls Walking tracks: James PADLEY (a photo of James would be welcome), the FINNIGANs (possibly Owen son of Patrick FINNIGAN & Mary KEEFE), Eli DEELEY, R COOPER. 19/16 Ethel Elizabeth SIMPSON, born 1896 Vic, dtr of Thomas SIMPSON, a potter, & his wife Elizabeth nee JOYNER (previously marr Henry DARKE) marr 1916 Lithgow John Andrew Colin AINSWORTH, born 1894 Minto son of James Henry AINSWORTH & Emma AINSWORTH. 18/16 Josiah Bridge GARNSEY married Eliza Susannah FULLOON in 1836 in Sydney and possibly moved to 'Lowther Park' between 1845 and 1848 to tutor John and Elizabeth GRANT's children. The Garnsey chn: Robert 1837, Josiah 1839, Sarah 1841, John 1843, William 1845, Charles 1848, Matilda 1849, Thomas 1851, Emma 1853. Josiah died in 1853 & is buried in the Lowther Park cemetery. Eliza then married Donald MCKILLOP in 1855 & died & was buried in Dubbo in 1873. Did Josiah tutor the Grant children & did he die on 'Rosevale' Kanimbla Valley? 17/16 Thomas GODDEN b1851 Bathurst married 1875 at Back Creek Mary Ann FLEETING. Their chn: Caroline 1876, Elizabeth 1877, Thomas 1879, William 1881. Thomas snr died 1935 Bathurst. Seeking information about the GODDEN family. 16/16 William James STAINES, b c1890 son of James Edward STAINES & Catherine BRUCE, married in 1912 in Cobar Charlotte Jane RYAN, b1889 daughter of Edward RYAN & Ann PUTLAND. They had chn: Dorothy, William, Leslie, John, Mildred, Thomas, Elsie, Mary, Kathleen, Stanley & Patrick. The family lived at Cullen Bullen where William was a miner at Invincible Colliery. Charlotte died in 1933 and William in 1941 and are buried at Cullen. Does anyone have any more information about this Staines family? 15/16 James SMITH, a carpenter, 31, born Scotland & Dellia MANNIX, 27, born Ireland, married in 1872 at Elizabeth St Sydney. They lived at Mt Clarence, Wallerawang & Naremburn in Sydney. Chn: Alexander, David, Elizabeth, Sydney, Delia, Ellen, Ethel, Emily, Agnes, William, Jessie, Andrew. Dellia died in Claremont WA in 1913 & is buried in Karrakatta cemetery. Searching for information re the parents' origins and immigration. 14/16 Ann AITKEN, b1861 Ayrshire & her sister Jennie, 19, arr on 'Aberdeen' 1886. Brought out by Hugh WALLACE who married their sister Mary. Ann marr Robert CRAIG, (a miner bc1856 Ayrshire), in Lithgow in 1886 & possibly died pre 1915 in a 'mining accident in Lithgow' although no record of this was found. Their children: Ann, William, John, Elizabeth. The last 2 were registered as CRIGE. Ann died in 1915 in Tasmania. What happened to Robert? 13/16 Looking for information about the life pre marriage of Edith ALDRIDGE who was christened on 6 Jan 1825 in the village of Nympsfield, 6 miles south west of Stroud in Gloucestershire. She was the daughter of Richard ALDRIDGE, a baker, and Sarah HASKINS-DANIELLS who married on 26 Mar 1822 in Bristol Gloucestershire. Edith later called her home in Petersham ‘Nymphsfield’. She probably came to Australia with her mother Sarah, after June 1841 when she appeared on the census with her mother and sisters Jane & Hester. She was employed by Andrew BROWN as either a companion to Andrew's wife Christina or as a nursemaid to their children. She married George GIBSON on 4 Jan 1844 at the BROWN house at Cooerwull. 12/16 Looking to confirm the information given by Ellen RYAN on her marriage to Ernest James MARSHALL on 14 Mar 1917 at St Paul's Anglican church, Lithgow. Ellen stated that she was 30 and had been born in Brisbane QLD, her father was Thomas Stanley RYAN, engineer and her mother Millicent Jane SIMPSON - both deceased. Nothing has been found or the information confirmed about Ellen prior to her marriage in 1917. 11/16 Looking for information about the death, wife, siblings, children and where John BRENNAN lived. He was born on 2 Oct 1844 at Maitland NSW, the son of John BRENNAN and Mary GRACE, both convicts born in Ireland, and married Jane Gullum, (born 1848 died 1882 both at Pitt Town daughter of John GULLAM / GWILLIAM and Ellen Alice ?BEHAN) on 22 Aug 1864 at the Manse, Pitt Town NSW. Consent given for John by his mother Mrs Mary GRONO John & Jane's son Richard was born & baptised in 1866 when the priest recorded his name as Bridget in the register. His birth certificate gives his name as Richard & place of birth Spring Grove. This was a block belonging to James RAWSTHORNE in the parish of Lett, Co Cook on the Coxs River, now partly under the waters of Lake Lyell. On 27 Jan 1869 John appears in the Police Gazette for 'stealing a horse & heading for Bowenfels or Cox's River near Hartley where his wife lives'. Richard was admitted to the Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children from the Benevolent Society. John was then said to be deceased. On 13 Oct 1869 Richard returned to his mother. John was sent to Darlinghurst Gaol in 1872 for robbery under arms, sentenced to 3 years' hard labour. There is mention of a John BRENNAN born 1844, who stole a horse near Wagga Wagga in 1879 that may be this John. Without a second name it is too difficult to say which death of a John or Jane BRENNAN is either of these. 10/16  Charlotte BROWN died in 1880 and is buried at South Bowenfels Presbyterian cemetery. Is her husband the Samuel BROWN who arrived, from Norfolk, on ‘James Gibbs’ in 1849 with his parents John, a mill labourer, & Elizabeth & siblings John, William, Miriam & Elizabeth? Did Charlotte arrive on the ship ‘Meteor’ in 1853? She was the daughter of Matthew Thomas Holbury WALTON & Elizabeth Mary TAYLOR born c1832 in Gravesend Kent. On Charlotte's shipping record her father's name was given as Aldborough WALTON, deceased. John Brown died in 1852 in Sydney and Elizabeth remarried George RIGBY in 1853. In 1872 his daughter Alice's baptism entry states that Samuel is a miller at Cooerwull. 9/16 William Taylor BYRNES b 21 Jul 1879 Castlereagh married 26 Nov 1890 in the Primitive Methodist church Penrith Maria Catherine Hall CUMMINS (Kate) who was born on 18 Nov 1872, daughter of Thomas & Augusta CUMMINS. Kate died from ovarian cancer on 4 Oct 1912 at her home in Corneytown leaving 10 children. She is buried in the Methodist cemetery Bowenfels. William married Adela HAYNES in 1948 & died on 4 Jun 1964 at Lidcombe Hospital. In which railway house did they live in Corneytown? 8/16 Francis JOHNSTON married Elizabeth / Betsey MURRAY daughter of Sage MURRAY & Jean / Jane BRUCE in 1840 at St Andrew's Scots church in Sydney. Their children: James b1841 (marr Mary Ann Teresa ROWE, daughter of John ROWE & Ann MCDONALD in 1866 at Bowenfels), Sage b1843, Janet Elizabeth b1845, Francis b1847. Elizabeth MURRAY and her family arrived in Sydney on 'Lady McNaughton' in 1839 from Navidale in the parish of Loth, Sutherlandshire, Scotland. Elizabeth died on 3 Feb 1849 at Molong NSW at her brother's home. Seeking information about Francis JOHNSTON's birth & arrival in Australia. He died in 1850 aged 56 & is buried in Kelso. Francis William JOHNSTON (son of James JOHNSTON & Mary Ann Teresa ROWE) married in 1902 at Bathurst Jane Bruce MURRAY, daughter of Adam MURRAY (brother of Elizabeth MURRAY) & Jane Sage MCKAY. Francis died at Hampton in 1935 & Jane died in Orange in 1939. 7/16 John CALLAGHAN b1862 Shropshire the son of James CALLAGHAN & Elizabeth FRANCE, arrived in Sydney on the 'Norval' in 1880 with his brother James. They went to Lithgow to join their parents and were brick and iron workers. John married Emma GRIFFITHS 23 Jan 1883 at the Vale of Clwydd schoolhouse. Emma was the daughter of Samuel GRIFFITHS & Sarah Ann ?GERRY & born c1865 in Shropshire. John died in 1931 & Emma in 1943. Both are buried in Rookwood, Sydney. 6/16 Thomas L'ESTRANGE arrived in Sydney in March 1841 on 'Berkshire', a Catholic farm labourer from Kings County Ireland aged 23. Could read & write. Brought out by Nicholas James. He married Margaret NAUGHTON/NORTON in 1845 in Sydney & they had 3 children: Mary 1846-1847, Catherine 1848 & Thomas Bernard 1850. Thomas held the licence for the Welcome Inn at Middle River/Marangaroo in 1846 and in 1847 had the Welcome Inn and the Beehive Stores in Mudgee. Margaret died in 1854 at Mudgee and Thomas was drowned in the Cudgegong River in 1856. 5/16 Seeking the school records of the VLAEMINCK, also known as FLEMING, children.  Charles Vlaeminck and Sarah Mary PETERS had 6 children; August Julius Vlaeminck and Elizabeth GUTERIDGE also had 6 children. John Bernard Vlaeminck and Maisie Iris Claurine Banfield had 1 child. Some of the children's baptisms appear in the Lithgow Catholic baptism register so it is possible that the children went to St Patrick's Catholic school in Lithgow as they don't appear in the admission registers of any other school in Lithgow. 4/16 Teresa CHATFIELD, the daughter of Frederick Percival Norris CHATFIELD, a mine manager born in New Zealand & Mary Dorothy HATCH, was born 9 Oct 1916 in Lithgow & married, (as Pauline), Roy DUDLEY in 1935 at Annandale. They had children: Ronald Jack b1938, Dorothy, Peter, William b 27 Apr 1950, Beryl, Lloyd. Pauline/Teresa died on 20 Feb 2002 at Tanilba Bay. Seeking further information about her. 3/16 Seeking information about soldier Jack HARVEY, born in Wellington NSW. When he enlisted in 1915 he said that his half-sister was Mrs Frances Ellen ANTHONY of 5 Reid (sic) Ave Lithgow. This address was the home of the Anthony family - mother Mary Anthony nee SARDIE, sons Joseph and David  and daughter Jessie.  Mary's husband George, a hawker, and father of Joseph, David & Jessie was last seen in the 1903 electoral roll in Orange where David's birth was registered as Betro Anthony. It isn't known what connection Frances had with the Anthony family. A Frances Helen Anthony was enrolled to vote at Airly from 1930 to 1937 with no further information about her found. No further information about George has come to light. David married Lavinia M STREET in 1920 in Lithgow and Joseph's marriage to Nellie RUSSELL was registered in Sydney in 1917 and 1920 with different numbers. Jessie married Kenneth ATTENBOROUGH but gave her address as 5 Read Ave when she wrote her will in 1950. No birth registration has been found for Jack HARVEY who also stated that his uncle, Hugh MURPHY, of 23 Ruthven St Waverley was his next of kin. 2/16 Looking for the arrival in Australia of James CALLAGHAN, an ironworker, and the death dates of James & Elizabeth Callaghan nee France. They were the grandparents of the three Callaghan men killed in France in WWI, sons of their son James and his wife Mary JAMES. 1/16 Looking for information about Mary SHEEHAN who had either a cafe or boarding house in Kandos and had lived at 49 Buchanan St Kandos. She also had a shop at 91 Main St West that sold lollies among other things. It was next to a tennis court and had a Kinkara Tea sign above the shop. Particularly interested in the shops and/or boarding house. Mary’s husband William died at 91 Main St West in 1952. The SHEEHANs took over the shop earlier in 1952 from Percy & Gladys GAUCHET and it was situated where the Bridgestone outlet is today. 22/15 Patrick LONG married Ann LENNON c1840 in Penrith. Patrick was a blacksmith and the family was known to be living at Bowenfels from 1856. He died in 1862 and is buried at Hartley. Ann then married Thomas CRESWICK of Ferngrove near Rydal in 1867. Ann's death in 1893 was registered in Lithgow.  Mary, the eldest of their nine children, married Andrew GILBERT, the son of Charles GILBERT and Isabella SNOWDEN in 1861 at St Bernard's Hartley and had twelve children and lived at Rydal, Ferngrove, Dunkeld, Wellington, Orange & Sydney. Andrew died in 1900 at Peak Hill while staying with his daughter and Mary died in Erskineville in Sydney in 1926 and is buried at Rookwood. 21/15 Fergus William Malcolm BROWN born 21 March 1906 Manly son of Fergus Lee Brown & Bessie MAUNSELL, married Lillian Mary KEITH 31 Mar 1937. Brothers: John David, Douglas Maunsell, Alan Lee. Possibly still alive 1966 when mentioned in father's death notice as Malcolm.  What happened to him? 20/15 Mary Ann SIVYER b c1828 daughter of Stephen SIVYER arrived in Sydney in 1838 on the 'Maitland' with her father & stepmother Mary STANNARD & a cousin Stephen SIVYER. She married Patrick BYRNES at Kanimbla House in 1846 & died at Lake Cargelligo NSW in 1907. Patrick died in 1900. 19/15 Jacob George JENKINS born 1859 Camden NSW married Cecilia CORBETT 1888 at Penrith. Jacob died & was buried in 1908 in Lithgow. They had children: Elizabeth, Sidney Francis & William James. Cecilia was born c1863 at Gundagai NSW, daughter of James CORBETT & Bridget RYAN & may have remarried William MCDONALD in Lithgow in 1913. When & where did Cecilia die? 18/15 William TAIT, a stonemason, was born c1831 Londonderry Ireland the son of William TAIT & Ann YOUNG & arrived in Australia c1838. He married Ann WILSON in 1852 in Sydney & died 30 Apr 1888 at Oakey Park after an accident. His wife Ann was born c1828 in Edinburgh Scotland the daughter of William WILSON & Elizabeth STRUTH & arrived in Australia c1831. Ann died on 14 Mar 1900. They are buried at Bowenfels. Their children were: Margaret, Elizabeth, William, Robert, Catherine & Edwin. 17/15 Richard John JOLLY was born in 1867 in South Australia the son of Richard JOLLY and Sarah BAILEY and registered as Richard Francis JOLLY. He married Christina JOHNSTON in 1889 in SA and they had children, the last born in 1913, 8 of whom were living when Christina died in 1940. Richard died on 7 Dec 1923 in Lithgow Hospital where he had been a patient for some time and is buried in the C of E section of the main Lithgow cemetery at Bowenfels. He left his family in Gladstone Sth. Aust and was not heard from again and before his admission to hospital was well-known in the Cullen Bullen and Lidsdale areas where he was a labourer. Information is sought about his life after he left home. 16/15 Edward GRIMES born c1790 Armagh married c1813 Co Roscommon Mary MCMULLEN  born c1798 daughter of Michael MCMULLEN/MILEN & Honora KENNEDY. Mary died in 1860 at Hartley. They arrived on the 'Hooghley' on 24 Feb 1828 with their daughter Charlotte. Edward was a member of the Royal Veteran Company of NSW. Their next child Edward was born in Sydney in 1829, George was born in 1831 at Dunns Plains near Bathurst where his father was a veteran pensioner & a (farm) overseer for Captain William Payne who was murdered on 17 Jul 1830. Mary was born in 1833 in the Bathurst district followed by John in 1834 at Parramatta, when his father was said to be a pensioner & Ellen's birth is recorded in 1838 in the Liverpool (Sydney) C of E baptism register. Charlotte married John EVANS, a mounted policeman, in 1845 in Sydney & died in Dubbo NSW in 1896. George, a policeman, married in 1854 at Hartley Sarah KEARNEY of Ben Bullen & died in ?1897 in Parramatta, buried Rookwood in Sydney. Mary married in 1848 in the Mulgoa/Penrith area John CALLAGHAN, also a policeman. She died in 1897 in Parkes NSW. Ellen married in 1861 in Bathurst John GORMAN, a Bathurst farmer & died in Bathurst in 1876. Keen to find any record of the police service at Hartley of those mentioned above. 14/15 Mary Ann AKERS married John Howie PATTERSON & d 1935 Lithgow. Their children: John Arthur Trident Patterson b 1887 Vic d 1924 in a mining accident at Lithgow & Isabella Patterson b 1878 Vic d 9 Dec 1951 buried Pipers Flat NSW. 13/15  SKEEN, John & Amelia COLLITS. 12/15 Robert BARRS b c1814, son of Sarah BARRS, marr 21 Nov 1843 at Hassans Walls NSW Jane DYKES nee CORRIN or CURRAN. Robert BARRS d 5 Oct 1855 at Off Flats near Lowther NSW. Jane was b c1806 on the Isle of Man, daughter of John CURRAN or CORRIN & Sarah PATIENCE & possibly arrived free on the 'Sarah' in 1832 (her brother & sister were already here) & marr Robert DYKES on 7 Nov 1834 (Bathurst Presbyterian register). Jane d 20 May 1885 Lidsdale NSW. Her children were: Robert, John & Phillip DYKES; William, Sarah & Elizabeth Jane BARRS. The Barrs are buried in the old Bowenfels Presbyterian cemetery next to Robert's mother Sarah. Robert DYKES arrived free in 1832 on the 'North Briton'. 11/15 Clare Jean Millicent MCCABE. Her marriage & death certificates stated that she was the daughter of William Henry MCCABE, a tailor & Elizabeth TAYLOR & was born at sea on the ship 'Jean Millicent' near Gibraltar c1896 on the way to Australia from Glasgow. Mention of a ship by that name has not been found nor has any mention of Clare's parents, either before or after her birth, been found. Clare marr Thomas PEARCE at Gosford NSW in 1917 & had 2 daughters Agnes & Jean. She died in Lithgow in 1943. Help to solve this mystery would be welcomed. 10/15 Agnes CAHOON b c1841 Ireland marr Francis MARTELL at Woolshed Vic in 1862 & had 10 sons & 1 daughter. Agnes died in Lithgow in 1915 - death notice in the Lithgow Mercury on 3 Jan 1916 p2. Francis died 1902 at El Dorado in Vic. 9/15 Carl MULLER b 1828 Germany marr c1855 in Germany Maria Josephine SCHOLL, b 5 Aug 1831 Rauenthal Germany dtr of Anton. Maria died 27 Jul 1897& is buried at Wallerawang/Pipers Flat NSW. Carl/Charles' death was registered in Lithgow no. 1869. John HOUGHTON b 1850 Sheldon Durham England marr 1882 Lithgow NSW Mary MULLER, died 1915 Wallerawang NSW. James WILSON, a convict, b 1809 London marr 1845 Hartley NSW Jane HARRIS, died 1889. His daughter Sarah was born in England & married Samuel MOORE in 1846 at Hassans Walls NSW & died at Mudgee. 6/15 Seeking information about Boer war soldiers with a possible connection to the Lithgow district: Joseph David CLARKE, Francis Schofield DAWSON, Richard HALL, Charles Stanley JOYCE, Sidney Henry (Sax) SAXELBY, Alfred SHARPE, Prince Richard TAYLOR, Edward Davies (Ted) THOMAS, Stephen Leslie WELLS, Alfred Henry WHILEY. 5/15 John BENTLEY was baptised on 13 Feb 1820 at St Clement Danes, Westminster, London the son of James & Elizabeth Bentley nee Chatterton and was a mounted policeman in SA 1855-1858 and in NSW 1864-1874 including Rockley, Stuart Town & Hartley. He & Johanna Shea had 10 children. John died in 1881 at Mt Victoria NSW & is buried at Hartley. Johanna died in 1918 & is buried at Mt Victoria. 4/15 MACKAY, Stanley b Allendale Vic marr. Chn: Mabel, Norman, Alfred, Clive, Doris & Joan. 2/15 MCGREGOR, Gregor later known as Robert Gregor b c1812 Scotland married 1. 18 May 1842 Hereford Mary BUTCHER who died 1862. Gregor married 2. 23 Jun 1864 Sydney Annie ECKFORD. Children: John R, Alexander H, Catherine M, Charles, Mary S, Annie E, Grace S, Alice M, Harriet N, Eliza. Gregor was the Chief constable at Hartley and later the licensee of the Welcome Inn at Middle River (Marrangaroo Creek). Looking for information about the location of the inn and a photo or sketch of it. His brother Thomas, who worked at a mine in Hartley Vale, married Alice HUTCHINSON whose mother Martha COOPER nee WILLIAMSON had moved to Hartley Vale from Melbourne after 1887 when her 2nd husband died. The family thinks that Martha ran a boarding house at Hartley Vale & made mention of the Wayside Inn & Harmony Cottage, Haggerty Lane. Are any of these places at Hartley Vale known to anyone?
